What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the label given to a collection of gut symptoms experienced over a prolonged period. These symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, cramps, diarrhea, and gas.

People with IBS often experience alternating episodes of constipation and diarrhea—trapping them between a desperate need to get to the toilet and the frustrating inability to go. In mainstream science and medicine, the exact cause of IBS is unknown. Dr. Sebi, on the other hand, was very clear about the real cause of IBS (and all diseases): mucus.

What is Mucus?

Mucus is a thick, gel-like liquid made mainly of water, inorganic materials, and a substance called mucin. Mucus is produced by mucous membranes found throughout the body and serves different critical functions depending on where it’s found:

  • Nose: Mucus provides protection from small particles, trapping and expelling them.
  • Eyes: Tears are water and mucus; crying removes debris from our eyes and releases emotions.
  • Lungs: Mucus protects the lungs from inhaled particles, you cough to get them out.
  • Gut: Mucus in the large intestine forms a protective layer, blocking harmful microbes.

Mucus is critical to removing substances from your body that shouldn’t be there. But, as Dr. Sebi taught us, too much mucus is the basis of all diseases. It means your body can’t remove stuff quick enough!

The Connection Between Mucus & IBS

When we consume inflammatory food, the gut reacts by producing mucus to protect itself from damage. This excess mucus forms a thick layer over the lining of the gut, depriving cells of oxygen. Waste stagnates in this deoxygenated environment, creating inflammation and toxicity. When excess mucus coats the intestines, it also prevents cells from absorbing nutrients from food, escalating the issue.

Often the labels used to identify different collections of symptoms can be simplified, highlighting their root cause. Health conditions with the suffix ‘-itis’ indicate an inflammatory condition associated with excess mucus:

  • Arthritis is caused by excessive mucus in the joints.
  • Prostatitis is caused by excessive mucus in the prostate.
  • Sinusitis is caused by excessive mucus in the nose and sinuses.
  • Bronchitis is caused by excessive mucus in the lung’s bronchial tubes.
  • Mucous Colitis/IBS is caused by excessive mucus in the intestines/colon.

Dr. Sebi taught us that consuming foods that don’t compliment our biological structure creates excess mucus. Therefore, eating Dr. Sebi’s approved foods and limiting (or ideally eliminating) mucus-forming foods—will significantly reduce gut mucus, and improve gut health.

“Mucus is the cause of every disease. Eliminate the mucus and you eliminate the disease.” - Dr. Sebi
